Torres Strait Traditional Languages Plan

The Torres Strait Traditional Languages Plan is an important foundational step to support the revitalisation and maintenance of our traditional languages.

Designed to be implemented through a two-staged process between 2016-2019, the plan supports the building of community capacity to:

  • Promote language use
  • Standardise orthography
  • Record and document traditional languages
  • Develop language resources including dictionaries
  • Provide training.

The success of the plan will be measured over time by the number of people who communicate using traditional languages everyday – in the home, at school, at work and in daily life.

Torres Strait Traditional Languages Charter

The Torres Strait Traditional Languages Charter recognises the aspirations and priorities of Torres Strait and Aboriginal people regarding the future of traditional languages and culture.

It provides a way for everyone to actively contribute to the revitalisation and maintenance of the traditional languages in the Torres Strait in big and small ways. It is a practical guide to identifying varying levels of participation and commitment – from the home to the workplace.

Statement of Commitment

All Torres Strait and Aboriginal peoples with a connection to the Torres Strait have a sovereign and human right to practice culture through the use of traditional languages in private and public life. Through the Charter, we recognise that we all have a role to play in the revitalisation and maintenance of the traditional languages and dialects of the Torres Strait.

We are committed to supporting Torres Strait and Aboriginal peoples to speak and use traditional languages on a daily basis for culture, well-being and spirit.
