The Torres Strait Traditional Languages Centre coordinates regional and community-specific efforts to retrieve, record and research our traditional languages. The centre has a community capacity building focus.
Servicing The Community
The centre aims to deliver services to the community through:
Advocating for and promote traditional languages revitalisation and maintenance
- Promoting awareness of traditional languages
- Advocating for policy and law reform
Supporting the work of community–based Language Teams
- Providing consistent expert information and advice
- Supporting and delivering training to Community Language Teams
Providing opportunities for Traditional languages learning and teaching
- Supporting the delivery of full emersion traditional language programs in schools
- Establishing a network of skilled traditional language teachers across communities
Developing traditional language resources
- Identifying, developing and distributing resources
- Providing digital technological capability
- Developing and standardising orthography
- Ensuring traditional ecological knowledge and intellectual property rights are upheld
Location
The Torres Strait Traditional Languages Centre is based in the Yangu Pawaw Ngurpay Mudh building in the grounds of Waybeni Koey Ngurpay Mudh – the Secondary Campus of Tagai State College on Thursday Island. The centre is staffed by a dedicated team of professional linguists and experienced program managers.
