The Torres Strait Traditional Languages Centre coordinates regional and community-specific efforts to retrieve, record and research our traditional languages. The centre has a community capacity building focus.
The centre aims to deliver services to the community through:
Advocating for and promote traditional languages revitalisation and maintenance
Supporting the work of community–based Language Teams
Providing opportunities for Traditional languages learning and teaching
Developing traditional language resources
The Torres Strait Traditional Languages Centre is based in the Yangu Pawaw Ngurpay Mudh building in the grounds of Waybeni Koey Ngurpay Mudh – the Secondary Campus of Tagai State College on Thursday Island. The centre is staffed by a dedicated team of professional linguists and experienced program managers.
