Revitalise and Maintain

Community Language Teams support the revitalisation and maintenance of traditional languages in communities. This primary focus is to develop the capacity of our people and communities to retrieve, record and research traditional language.

The specific role of each Community Language Team is developed in response to the needs and opportunities of individual communities and, therefore, is different across the region.

In general, Community Language Team work with individuals and the wider community to:

  • Encourage personal growth and individual commitment
  • Build the capacity of the communities
  • Provide opportunities for traditional languages learning and teaching
  • Develop traditional languages resources
  • Support standardising orthography
  • Ensuring traditional ecological knowledge and intellectual property rights are upheld
